Yorkshire Pennine Centre was formed in 1985 from the Yorkshire Centre. In 2006 the Centre Celebrated its 21st Birthday and 1000th Rally with a celebration rally held at Drax Power Station near Selby, North Yorkshire, Over 100 vans attended the four day celebrations.  Plans are already starting to be be made for the 25th Anniversary/birthday celebrations in 2010

The Yorkshire Pennine Centre was born when after 49 years the three groups that were left in the old Yorkshire Centre decided to form centres in their own right.

An extraordinary general meeting was called by the then South West group at Ossett Town hall in 1984,chaired by the then Caravan Club Vice Chairman, the late Ted Oliver. After a vote it was decided to form the old South West Group into as yet an unnamed centre.

A new committee was voted on from the floor and for some reason we ended up with two Vice Chairmen, but this problem would be sorted out at the last AGM for the South West Group in September, there is still one committee member serving on the committee today that was voted on that night and that is David Ferdinand. It had been decided by the Caravan Club that the new centres would come in to being on January 1st 1985. At the AGM held at Ossett Community Centre names were put forward for the new centre and after a vote the Yorkshire Pennine Centre name was adopted and the name sent to East Grinstead for approval. Before the AGM the then committee asked the then South West Group  Chairman, Mrs Zena Pilmer if she would stop for an extra year and become the very first Chairman of the Yorkshire Pennine Centre and make sure there was a smooth transition from a group to a centre.

Her first Committee Was;

Chairman Mrs Zena B Pilmer.
Vice Chairman George Bolt.
Secretary Mrs Dorothy Croft.
Treasurer Don Kellett.
Rally Secretary Dennis Padgett
Teenage Chairman Debbie Pearson.

The very first rally of the Yorkshire Pennine Centre was held at the Lower Clough Foot, Caravan Club Site and the Rally Marshals were Terry and Elizabeth Hopkinson and the first birthday Dinner dance was held at the Princess restaurant in Huddersfield on Saturday the 18th of January 1986 and it was organised by two members still rallying Louis and Enid Pearson and David and Pauline Hirst (the latter spending much of their time abroad with their motor home) and now go on international rallies.

A teenage committee was also formed with Debbie Pearson being voted in as its first Chairman, and one of the original Teenage committee rallies today with his own family and that is Graham Clay.

Then as a centre we were invited to compete in the Joint Yorkshire Centres Sports in our own right, we were also invited to become a fully fledged member of the Northern Centres rally and the Joint Liaison committee, so which we sent two delegates to each meeting and we also had a voice in London when our Chairman became a member of the Club Council.

When Zena retired as Chairman, George Bolt was voted in and under George we acted as host for the very first time at the Joint Yorkshire Track Tests, with George as Chairman, Dorothy Croft as Secretary and Don Kellett as Treasurer, the Six Star rally as it is now called has its own Secretary and Treasurer and nowadays the host centre only provides the Chairman.

At the start of 1993 Bill Warren took over as Chairman and once again we were to act as host  for the Joint Yorkshire Track tests and not only was Bill Chairman of the event but for two years acted as rally marshal and under Bill the Centre celebrated its 10th year with a rally at Durker.

In 1999 David Smith took over as Centre Chairman and once again we were hosts for the Joint Yorkshire Track tests but unfortunately the decision was made to cancel the whole rally due to the petrol shortages of that year, so all the work David had done as Chairman and the work of the Track test committee was wasted that year.

Rally Secretary Juanita Allen.

Under David a new Teenage committee was formed but this time it was named the Youth Section and the age was lowered to attract juniors to form a committee under the guidance of Suzanne Jaques and under Suzanne they raised a lot of money for charity.

In 2000 the centre held a millennium rally at Tong with David as Chairman and Maurice and Angela Renton as rally marshals and our main guest was Alan and Cath Miller from Scotland, Alan was on the Caravan Club Executive committee until 2008 when he retired, and he has also been a guest at our Dinner Dance and well over 100 vans enjoyed a rally that was bathed in sunshine all weekend.

In 2002 another David was voted in as Chairman this time David Neve and once again we were invited to act as hosts for the Joint Yorkshire centres sports rally this time at Carlton Towers, with David as event Chairman and another David as rally marshal in fact David and Pauline Smith were rally marshals.

In 2003 we were called upon to host the Northern Centres rally at Grange Park near Wetherby, with David Neve as rally Chairman and David Smith called out of retirement to be the Rally Officer, in fact David has been the Northern Centres rally officer for a record three times and in 1994 we lent him and his expertise to South Yorkshire to act as rally officer for them at Stockeld Park when their rally officer had to pull out with ill health.

In 2004 under David’s chairmanship at the Joint Yorkshire Sports the Centre won the Mid-West Teenage Tug-of-War Trophy and the centre was the overall winners of the Henrietta Spivey sports trophy.

At the start of 2005 we had another new Chairman this time a lady who had been the Sports Officer for many years,Elaine Teece and in 2006 Elaine was the event Chairman for the renamed track tests now the Six Star Rally and under Elaine we moved our Dinner Dance to Baines Hall after the Painthorpe Country Club was sold and pulled down for housing and we still hold sell out Dinner Dances at Baines Hall.

In in 2006 with Elaine at the helm we had a very successful 21st Birthday and 1000th rally at Drax with over 100 vans attending and the then Vice Chairman of the club soon to be Chairman,Grenville Chamberlain as our guest.

In 2008 another David was voted as Chairman (lot of David’s in this Centre) but this David had been Chairman before and after 13 years as Secretary David Ferdinand decided to stand for Chairman again  and in 2008 we were again invited to host the Joint Yorkshire Centres Sports held at this time at Rufforth with David as host Chairman and David and Pauline Smith and Geoff and Elaine Teece acting as rally marshals, also in 2008 we had the honour to have the new club Chairman, Grenville Chamberlain as our guest at our Dinner Dance.

We still have the other two David’s on committee with David Neve being the Secretary and David Smith the Vice Chairman and Brochure Secretary and to complete the four past Chairmen on committee is Elaine Teece who came from Chairman to the tea and coffee provider in one year.

We now look forward to our silver jubilee in 2010 and it will be celebrated at Shepley over the weekend of 24th to 28th  of June and at this time its time to think of the members who are no longer with us and made it possible for us to be a centre, Past Chairman Zena Pilmer and Bill Warren who have past away, George Bolt who has given up caravanning and Michael Mulroy who still caravans but we don’t see him much unless you go to the national etc and its members like these and all the others who have supported the centre over the years that have made it what it is today
